thanks for Chutneys - and Westside roast chicken survey

I'm starting to think that one of the oddities of this town is the profusion of high quality roast/grilled chicken available on the far Westside. I mean, I live near Zankou and Pollo a la Brasa, and I really enjoy them both, but the UCLA-ish area has it beat.

First of all, for Ambhala Dhaba's glorious (when not terrible and reheated, see earlier post) ludhiana chicken.

Second of all, for Scheherezad Flame's $7 lunch special whole cornish hen, marinated, skewered, and grilled.

And third of all, (thanks for those who recommended) for Chutneys, a small Pakistani place at the corner of Barrington and, Pico? Decent lamb saag - better than most of the Westside crap joints, but not incredible - but really great yogurt-marinated tandoor roast chicken. Not the mad spice-craziness of Ambhala Dhaba, but very tasty chicken, mellow and very chickeny and moist as hell.

Not complicated, but utterly satisfying. In the way that some of those good roadside fried chicken joints in Tennessee are satisfying.

Definitely made to order, definitely made with love.

Of these chickens, my favorite is Ambhala when it works, next up - lacking in pure overwhelming glory but otherwise completely soul-satisfying, is Chutneys. Scherezad is plainer, and uses less tasty fowl, but also good. And comes with damn fine rice.
