I enjoyed a cheap meal-for-two at Punjabi on Houston just above Avenue A this past Saturday. It was my first time eating at a taxi-driver's meal-on-the-go spot, and it got me wondering about which one is the best according to Chowhounders?
Punjabi was pretty good--we had a #1 and a #3 over rice with samosas and sodas, and it was $7. The meal was just the right amount (I usually overeat Indian food) and the samosa was the best I'd ever had. Even though the place was small and crowded, it was a very pleasant meal because of the relaxing music and the quiet hum of conversations between cabbies. It was nice to eat homemade food in virtual silence.
I haven't noticed too many of these places, although I spotted one on 20th and 9th Avenue, and there seems to be another next door to Punjabi.
So, what do you all think (and what do CHs call this type of place)?
