***Chowing with the Hounds Picnic, Oct. 12***

The Picnic Hounds | Sep 12, 2002 02:33 AM

For most of us Chowhound is invaluable with tips, opinions, thoughts, suggestions and directions to places we'd never otherwise encounter. Now's the chance to meet and eat with all those people whose posts you know and trust. It's time for a picnic--a serious chowdown with all your new and old chowfriends.

Mark your calendar:
Saturday, October 12, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m
Golden Gate Park (Site location/directions will be emailed upon payment.)

Invitations extend to one chowhound, one Significant Other, children of the immediate family and well-behaved chowpups on leashes.

The deadline is near. Your registration must be received by September 17th. Space for this event is very limited. We will attempt to accommodate all who would like to attend, however, tickets may sell out prior to the deadline.

The cost is $35 per person over the age of 8, $20 under 8. Everyone will receive a limited edition logo chowmug, a glorious repast of Chowhounds' favorite foods, participation in a fun tasting event plus nonalcoholic drinks, park fees and a Goodwill contribution to our favorite site.

Food Contest...
Everyone will sample from the groaning board and vote for the most delectable of delectables. Certificates will be awarded for achievement in hyperdeliciousness in the following categories: appetizer, salad, bread/pizza/sandwich, entrée, low-calorie dishes, and dessert. Additionally, prizes will be awarded for the overall favorite entry and for the best "theme" entry for foods or beverages that can be consumed from the limited edition logo chowmug (soups, beverages, Golden Gate Park October Specials like hot mulled cider).

Tasting....
Chowhound's picnic feast would not be complete without a tasting to puzzle our taste buds. This year we will be sampling a variety of quality first cold press virgin olive oils from around the world. To soak up the olive oil and provide us with further tasting pleasure, there will be three local artisan breads. By the end of the tasting, we hope you will have discovered whether you prefer citrusy, floral, herbal or something in between, and everyone will be a winner thanks to handouts compiled by the Chowhound team!

Cookbook...
We're creating a cookbook this year and would love to include your recipe. If you want to participate, indicate this on the registration form. The cookbooks will be electronic, rather than printed, although we hope to have a printed version available at the picnic to peruse. It will include recipes from both this and last year's picnics.

What to bring:
A shared dish to feed 20, homemade or purchased at your favorite haunt so don't feel intimidated. Your dish will automatically be entered in The Food Contest. Feel free to enter more than one category. See registration form for sign ups.

Picnic supplies:
coals, lighter fluid and tongs if you wish to barbecue on the park's grills picnic blankets, chairs, plates, cutlery, wine and/or beer (no hard liquors please).

Your volunteering spirit:
We need every Chowhound to volunteer for an assignment to help with the picnic. With all pitching in each person's task will be minimal. See registration for sign ups.

So now let's gather and chow!

This is a private, volunteer assisted event. No agency relationship, express or implied exists between any parties and Chowhound, Inc. This is not a Chowhound, Inc. sponsored event.
