In April (school spring break), Scargod and I each flew independently to Las Vegas to my brothers home. There I bought his 1990 Miata and Scar and I began a riotous, gluttonous and Scotch soaked trip through Arizona, NM to Austin where we both have children in school. We then hit NOLA, rural Georgia, Savannah, the outer banks and Cape May, New J. If interested check out the respective boards.
I woke up early April 26th near New Haven and still had a seven hour drive home to Ellsworth. I snuck out quietly at 5:30 and made tracks to Middletown and O'Rourke's Diner before it got mobbed. I had the nova lox omelet. First arrived some cranberry bread and black coffee. The omelet arrived w a good portion of lox, raw onion, capers and sour cream w/ a side of home fries and puried turnip. The omelet was excellent, as was the turnip. The home fries were ok. A young man brought another slice of lemon bread and then hot brownies. There was a group of Wes students, and as my son is an alum, chatted w/ them.
Next stop, I needed to stretch, was Fat Boys in Brunswick, Me for a couple of $6.95 lobster rolls. They are not big, but sure are tasty and hit the spot. Good welcome back to Maine.
Got home and after greetings w/ my better half, cooked some lamb chops, garden frozen green beans and baked potato w/ a bottle of pinot. Good to be home!
In conclusion, Scargod and I met on Chowhound, and when I asked him to accompany me on this trip, I prefaced that afterward we would either never speak again, or become the best of friends. The latter has happened. We were, I feel, really well matched complementary travel companions. What one lacked, the other supplied and both were gracious in giving in to the other. The only disappointment I feel is that the trip is over and I am looking for excuses for another. I just want to thank Chowhound, without this forum, I would never have had the pleasure of meeting the wonderful man that we know as Scargod. Aw shucks.
