Chowdown #62 in 2003: Chutney Gourmet Curries, SF

Six intrepid masala hounds – Ivan Stoler from NY, Mel “beanbag”, Alexandra Singer, Abby, Malik, and I – met at Chutney Gourmet Curries in the heart of the Tandoorloin tonight. This was a light turnout for a San Francisco dinner, perhaps the rest of you couldn’t miss Trista and Ryan’s wedding. (ggg)

In search of the best this kitchen has to offer, we cut a wide swathe through the menu. We may have found it in the day’s special, Chicken Cholley, presented as a specialty of Lahore. Here’s the list of what we ordered:

Seekh Kabab (beef)
Tandoori Lamb Chops
Tandoori Fish (catfish)
Keema Naan

Chicken Cholley (daily special)
Karayla Gosht (bitter melon and lamb curry)
Prawn Masala
Palak Aloo Methi (spinach and potatoes with fenugreek)
Bengun Sabsi
Lamb Biryani
Rice Pullao
Plain Naans

Gulab Jamun
Kheer Rice Pudding
Mango Lassi

In the BYO Brews category, we toured

Lagunitas IPA
Anderson Valley “Hop Ottin” IPA
Bear Republic Stout

Prices are still a buck or so lower than the competition and the portion size seems a little bigger. So, it was a huge amount of food for our group and there were ample leftovers.

Tab was $80, including tax, and we added in a $10 tip, for a $15 per person cost. I’ll ask the masala hounds to please chime in on their likes and dislikes.
