Chowhounds! There is FABULOUS ASIAN FOOD in McAllen! I'm just back from two days/three nights there and for the first time ever I wish I could go back again tomorrow for lunch and dinner at HOP TUNG, 4100 N. 10th Street. This restaurant was reviewed in the link posted in answer to my request for good Asian food in McAllen (thanks, Chimayo Joe), and lemme tell you: it was SO good we ate there twice in two days, once for dinner and the second time for lunch.
The location is inauspicious, in one of the ubiquitous strip malls lining 10th Street. The ambience is generic Asian, with large photos of Vietnamese and Chinese specialties lining the walls. The waitstaff is exceptional: friendly, knowledgeable, unobtrusive but attentive. (After you eat, ask your waiter for a paper star~he'll know what you mean.)
The restaurant has been open under its current ownership for 6 months.
The food! The food! Maybe I've been Chinese and Vietnamese-deprived for too long, but oh man, this was terrific. We ordered the spring rolls (delicious), the fried dumplings (plump, juicy, fried crispy on one side, served with soy/vinegar/chile). Then we ordered orange chicken and pork fun chow~both perfectly prepared and in huge portions. The vegetables and noodles in the fun chow dish were exactly right, crisp-tender and fresh. The orange peel in the chicken was plentiful, the chicken came in large chunks, the sauce was (to my mind) exquisite.
We didn't have enough appetite left to try any of the long list of Vietnamese specialties: the pho, the vermicelli bowls, the lemongrass/chile dishes~the menu is extensive and marvelous.
Prices are low (dinner with two appetizers and two main dishes plus a couple of drinks was just about $25.00).
If you're planning to be in McAllen, GO. Go twice. In fact, if you're as Asian-deprived as I was, plan a trip to McAllen JUST to go. I know I will.
