Well these didn't qualify for Mr. Taster's off the geographic radar thread since they're Chinese restaurants in the San Gabriel Valley, but having run out of new places to report on within the core SGV I've been forced to extend my geographic radius. First of all is House of Bennie in Covina. As you old timers may remember, one of the pioneering Hong Kong style restaurants in the late 1970s was House of Louie, located in the large shopping center on the NE corner of Garfield and Garvey in Monterey Park. Until the opening of restaurants like House of Louie, Nam Tin and Kin Kwok in Monterey Park, and Kin Hing in Alhambra we had never heard of the term "Hong Kong style cuisine." But by the mid-1980s the west SGV (which at that point only encompassed Monterey Park, Alhambra and Montebello--San Gabriel hadn't joined the food parade yet) had started to fill up with Hong Kong style places, so House of Louie fled to West Covina, where they've been ever since. I have only been back to House of Louie a couple of times after they moved and while my reaction was that they went way downhill, quite possibly they merely stayed the same while everybody else passed them up. Anyway, recently much of the staff from House of Louie moved to the new House of Bennie at 624 Shoppers Lane, so Covina now has two authentic Chinese eateries, the other being the underrated Town Sent Seafood on San Bernardino Road.
The other new restaurant is called Couwami and touts itself to be an Asian fusion restaurant. However, it's really a semi-authentic Chinese restaurant that happens to serve a few dishes from other Asian cuisines. It's located at 437 S. Azusa Ave. in Azusa near Gladstone St. and only worth checking out if you're in the area.
