China Yuan in Tampa... 5-6 visits... Wha?

I was happy that they did duck that had decent flavor, and I got that a few times, each time ordering something to go...
My plan was to munch my way thru their menu...
Their apparent "authentic" approach is/was appealing to me as I'm getting sick to death of the often to sweet and bready Chinese buffet scene...

But I'm rapidly losing enthusiasm...
The last few times, the duck was served either room temp or cool it seemed, from the air conditioning...

Greasy things can't handle that... grease thickens when cooled... and they haven't been that meaty...
I've been leaving feeling that I just did myself harm with no real reward...

I've had the Tripe with Black Beans and the flavors were one dimensional and the trip was rubbery...
A couple more hours in the pot, and some love, and it might have become soul food, I dunno...

I had the Eggplant in Garlic sauce and it was creamy, but too sweet and again, too simple...

On one "to go" day I called in a large order of Young Chow fried rice...
I wanted to see what "China Yuan" did with this (hopefully loaded) fried rice dish...
I was in the mood for shoveling large spoonfuls of rice down my neck, but as I opened the styro in my truck, I was surprised to have been sold one of the most flavorless, generic, mall fast-food, skimpy, fried rices I've ever had... and I'm really not that picky... I'm talkin' skimpy, and it wasn't that cheap!
With all the meats and seafood that have hanging around I figgered I'd be in for a treat... Nope!

I've tried some appetizers... I wanted to see what they did with the roast pork in the window so I ordered the BBQ pork appetizer...
It was six or seven small slices of COLD pork and a big bowl of white rice...
I couldn't believe it...

The next time I ordered the Squid appetizer...
I always noticed those big ol' squid in the window and I wondered what they did with them...

They seem to be Cuttlefish actually, but no matter to me... I hear CHOP CHOP CHOP from next to the duck showcase and I was brought a small plate of cold white chunks of squid, and a big bowl of white rice...
The squid was simply steamed with only the flavor that God gave it...
Again, I couldn't believe it... I put some soy sauce on the squid and the rice and endeavored to get it down...

An observation is that the menu is not that extensive... Could I possibly be ordering all the wrong things?

I'm hesitant to order clams (that have been recommended here) and get a plate full of shells...

So I'm gonna try it a couple more times...

As someone somewhere said recently; "I go to oriental places because it's the only thing I can't make better at home"...

I relate to that statement in general, but even I, as someone who tastes the food I make along the way, wouldn't be satisfied with such one dimensional flavors...
I've seen no art, talent, love, or creativity so far... and I'm a real good tipper!

Except for the stupid squid appetizer, I really havent tried their seafood yet... I will...

I'm not a picky ego guy complaining... just another fat Foodie... :-)
