I finally got around to e-mailing China Star, asking them to please translate their specials into English, and how that would let more people order them who might otherwise be intimidated or not wanting to waste the server's time getting him or her to translate them all. Less than 2 hours later I received a response:
"Dear Jim Rice,
Thanks for your recent email, and we are pleased to know that you enjoyed our food.
In response to your suggestion on translating the weekly-special menu into English, we will do our best to make such necessary improvement! Please note that, Weekly-specials are mostly authentic traditional Chinese food with Chinese names that carry appealing charm rather than simply state what such recipes are made of. Therefore, sometimes it's difficult to make translation literally.
Again, thank you for your support. Please feel free to express yourself about our restaurant by sending us emails.
We'll make changes to improve your dining experience at China Star."
James G., Thanks for all your work translating these for us. Hopefully next time, I won't have to carry a printout of your translations to the restaurant.
