Chief Martindale Diner; Village Pizza, Rhinebeck

A couple of nice surprises over the weekend. Stopped on Friday at Village Pizza (same as the Red Hook folks?) to grab a bite before a movie at Upstate Films. The pizza by the slice was really good -- one NY style with sausage bits and a little pepperoni and one with fresh tomato with basil. When good tomatoes are in, these should be even better.

Since a granola bar doesn't much sustain one after a 3-hour bird walk in Hillsdale Marsh, I had a late breakfast at Chief Martindale Diner on Rt. 23 by the Taconic access. I went in with some trepidation as my recollection from the "to camp" route years ago was that this was one to bypass, I continued to hold that view. I guess when you're hungry enough... Nice surprise -- clean curtains, tidy place, very reasonable, if not a knockout, BUT the PERFECT poached egg, a first. Accustomed as I am to ordering a "dropped" egg in New England coast places, they come close but not quite; this was a bonus.
