A good Chicken Fried Steak (CFS) is hard to find in California. I have found two that I think are very good. At Harris Ranch they begin with a large thick fresh New York. They put it through the tenderizer twice. The batter is perfectly thick and crispy golden brown. The white country gravy is also very good and smothers everything. As I recall (last year) it came with mashed potatoes and two huge buttermilk biscuits. The breakfast version comes with hash browns. I have had both the breakfast and lunch CFS at Harris and was happy with the food both times. The service is not what it should be but that may reflect more the remote area than the manager. Bottom-line -- maybe the best CFS in Cal.
The place that comes to mind whenever I head South toward San Diego is The Swing Inn. The CFS is a real steak that is tenderized, battered and deep-fried. The one I had last Saturday morning had just a little fat under the batter but that tasted very good. The hash browns are always a crispy golden brown. The biscuits and country gravy are reason enough to stop. Maybe the best CFS in So. Cal.
I have not yet been to Hash House A Go Go but I have heard some good words about the place on Chowhound. The web page talks about a "Big O' Crispy Hand Hammered Pork Tenderloin." Anyone know about that sandwich?
