Chicharrones Stuffed Sopaipilla, Casa de Benavidez in Albuquerque

After Saturday’s Pork & Brew contest, then some sightseeing at the Veterans Memorial, and a chow stop at the Antojitos La Tia wagon (http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/698991 ), I made my way to my planned dinner stop at Casa de Benavidez ( www.casadebenavidez.com ). I had enjoyed the stuffed sopaipilla so much at Mary & Tito’s the day before, I wanted to try it here for comparison’s sake.

Sadly, this was pretty much a wash out. Maybe it was a mistake to try to eat after judging barbecue all day and not being hungry. Or maybe I ordered the wrong thing.

The soft, nearly white sopaipilla served with honey and the stuffed sopaipilla made me wonder if these were the Wonder Bread versions of fry bread. There was more cheese than green chile on my plate. The green chile that was there was quite watery. Even the beans were bland and lacking in salt. I did like the housemade crunchy chicharrones and the red salsa served with the chips was quite serviceable.
