In the burbs, southwest of Boston in this case, any new upscale addition to chow options is met with a lot of buzz and recently that buzz has been about Chiara in Westwood.
Arrived Saturday night at 7:00. 2/3 full. Nice room, plenty of bare dark wood and muted earth tones.
About 30 tables, most close enough to get to know your neighbor, if you like.
For apps my SO had the mushroom soup with carmalized onions. She yummed it up. I also thought it was good.
I got the grilled Calamari & Shrimp. The Calamari was cold, which was interesting. The shrimp had a spice rub on them that completely killed any flavor the shrimp may have had. Our bread basket, thick sourdough & crunchy flatbreads arrived halfway through our apps. This seemed to be the norm, why I'm not sure.
For entrees my wife had the scallops. Four very large scallops cooked to perfection with a side salad. I had the tuna steak special, which was two nice size steaks, pink on the inside served on a potato wedge and accompanied by a warm spinach and plum tomato salad. The dish as a whole was very good, but it was served with a black olive puree which I didn't think complimented the tuna.
Chiara has only been open for a few months which hopefully explains the service we received. While everything arrived hot and we were not ignored, we felt that the servers in general were not professional and our main server was actually annoying.
I know that there are professional servers at Isabellas down the road in Dedham, so they are not unheard of out in the sticks.
All in all the food was very good, but the service really needs to improve if I'm going to become a regular. $120.00 before tip, includes 2 glasses of wine at $13/each.
Not too bad, but I spent less and felt I got more at Oleana & ECG.
