I dined Chez Spencer on Saturday evening for the first time. The place gets full props in terms of atmosphere, service and presentation.
We had a very nice meal - but I can't say it was fabulous. Perhaps it was in the ordering (or maybe our taste buds were off) but flavors weren't as rich as I had hoped. The duck breast salad with lardon was quite good as was the antelope. The duck breast on the salad was smoked - but perhaps slightly overpowering. The antelope - which was quite tender - had a strong pepper taste. We also had the green asparagus with truffle vinigrette - it was good but left me wanting in flavor. The biggest dissappointment was the flat iron steak with morels. The meat, frankly, was just not that good. It was tender and prepared to my asking but the flavor of the meat was minimal and what was there wasn't pleasant at all. The morels were also a bit gritty.
Dessert was indeed fabulous and would recommend highly the Hazelnut Parfait with Espresso Carmel sauce. I'm generally not a dessert eater but found this outstanding especially because it wasn't cloyingly sweet.
Anyway, all in all our meal was good but just not great. I'm wondering what others think and am willing to believe that it was an off night - either for the restaurant or for our tastebuds. I'd definitely give it a second chance.
