another Chez Panisse alum to open next door to Dona Tomas (+ D.T. review)

That's the word on the street that I got when dining at Dona Tomas (52nd and Telegraph in N. Oakland/Temescal). The permit sign outside says "Charlie's Wood Fired..." (can't remember the last word...maybe grill or oven)? Don't know who Charlie is exactly. Beer and wine served. They are diligently working inside but probably won't be open for a while. So many ex-Panisse alums branching out after the great noteriety is attached to their names.

Meanwhile...Dona Tomas was fabulous, as always. My favorite was an app. - crispy masa cakes with shrimp, black beans, yummy salsa and avocado. The potoato and chile taquitos were good too and served with mole. Entree was a vegetarian black mole (not the same as above) stew with green beans, squash, rice, and masa dumplings. Not crazy about the masa dumplings here. A little too doughy. They do great sauces there & the chips come with great sauce (not your run of the mill salsa) and the drinks are wonderful (i.e. tequila shot + zesty sangrita chaser). ~ $60 including a couple drinks.

The bar (red) room is open 'til midnight now on fri and sat.
