My friend and I were planning to have Cuban sandwiches in the bar but the wait was on the long side so we relented and headed into the restaurant.
Food was good, service good, overall a pleasant experience, which is what I know I can expect here.
The bread basket was really nice, our waitress was very sweet and funny and we had a variety of people coming and going to serve us.
I got the prix fixe ($39 for choice of two apps, choice of two dinners and any dessert from the menu). I got escargot, salmon and the Boca Negra for dessert, as well as the white wine special ($9). The escargot were what I remember from when I was in France, which is to say, they taste like creatures that live in a garden to me. These were not strongly garlicky but they were fine. My salmon was nicely done and came with a little mushroom sandwich and a pea puree. All fine. It was a bit tough to eat the pea puree as I had no spoon, just a knife and fork. I love the Boca Negra dessert -- I've had it before. It is a rich, fudgey cake with peanut brittle and banana ice cream and dollops of caramel. Your mouth tingles after each bite from the chipotle which I love.
My friend got the prime rib special which was truly fantastic -- cooked to perfection and great flavor. It came with mashed potatoes and asparagus.
Total with alcohol and with tip was $140 -- definitely not what we would have paid in the bar but I think the prix fixe is a reasonably good deal.
I like this place and certainly will keep it in mind. It's a bit out of my price range and it doesn't have the WOW experimental factor I get at say, Gargoyle's, but it was exactly what I was looking for and expected.
