Chef Geoff's - Egad!

As a keen NYC chowhound this is my first post to the DC board, sorry it isn't a tad more positive. I was kind of stuck in the downtown area (yes, I know that particular neighborhood's unlikely to be a chowhound's idea of paradise) Sunday night and made the mistake of choosing Chef Geoff's. Atmosphere was pleasant, bread fresh & tasty. The seared scallop starter was fine. Wine by the glass was just ok, but at least not overpriced.

But then... holy god the beef short ribs. What were they *thinking*? I've almost never been served such totally insipid food in this country (Wendy's notwithstanding). Tender to be sure, but tender like they've been boiled a couple of weeks with the water changed hourly. I just couldn't eat it. The waitress was extremely nice, asked me if I'd care for something different but I was really too stunned, hope that doesn't sound overdramatic.

In the end I asked for more of the collards with pork bits that came on the side of the "beef", and were actually delicious - to my yankee tastes this resembled good ol' southern cookin'. When bill time came she apparently felt so sorry for me eating my quasi-veggie dinner that she took the dish off the bill without being asked to. So I can't blame management or staff for arrogance or intransigence.

But I still can't believe anyone'd serve a dish like that with absolutely no seasoning, sauce or other flavoring.
