Cheap and distinctive street food/takeout

Hi everyone,

I'm going to be in NYC for a day next week, and I was hoping to grab some good cheap food to eat as I walk around the city and discover some neighborhoods I wouldn't ordinarily get the chance to see (the last time I was in NYC, I was 14 and on a family vacation, i.e. confined to Midtown Manhattan). I know this is a pretty broad question, but here are a few specifics:

* I'd prefer to do something more adventurous than a hot dog and a slice of pizza; besides, I'm a Chicagoan :-)
* Subway-accessible (I won't have much time)
* Take-out, street food, or otherwise portable (again, too little time to sit in a restaurant for an hour)
* As cheap as possible (college student)

Other than that, I'd love to know if you folks have any favorites you'd recommend. Thanks so much!
