Chauncey Creek Lobster Pier, Kittery Point, ME - June 2009 report

My parents were here in Boston for a brief visit. They were all about lobster, so on their last rainy day, I decided that we would drive up to Maine for lobster. The plan was to drive up for lunch, and then bring them to the airport. And, this part of Maine is only psychologically far from Boston because driving time was about an hour and 15 minutes.

I had been to Chauncey Creek about 10 years ago (after reading a really short blurb in the Boston Globe) and really liked it. But, mostly, I make lobster at home. Since I wanted to show them a bit of NE and scenery and I didn't want the mess in my apt, we drove up to Kittery Point.

This place was great. Not only was it picturesque, but the staff were extremely friendly and competent. My dad was thrilled to see the lobster tanks, organized by different sizes. He ordered a 2 lb lobster and the three of us got 1.5 lbs. We also ordered steamers and french fries. Since this place is BYO anything they don't have on the menu, we had a six pack with us. The staff brought out a beer opener.

Steamers - These were superior to anything I've had in Massachusetts (and I've clam crawled through Cape Ann). These steamers were not only expertly cooked, but the bellies were really fat and juicy. These were so good that we almost ordered a second batch. But since this was only lunch and we still had the lobsters coming, we refrained.

Lobsters - again, nothing tricky here, but these were perfect. Sweet and the meat just slid out of the shells. Even the tail wasn't tough. Moreover, there was a lot of tamale goodness in the heads, and the sizes of our lobsters gave us satisfying meat in the head/body region.

I'm sure this place is a zoo at dinner time (it was 10 years ago and it was mosquitoey), but it was the perfect lunch setting on a cool/misty NE day.
