Yesterday I ventured out to the Early Bird Diner on Savannah Hwy past the BMW dealership. The building looks like an old Huddle House or similar, but they have fixed up the inside with contemporary art. A large chalk board above the counter shows the menu, which seems to be constantly in flux (several items were added and removed during the hour and half I was there). Half the menu is breakfast (served all the time) and half is lunch with an emphasis on lowcountry. My companion had the Lowcountry Shrimp Fried Rice ($10), which contained fresh jumbo shrimp, sausage, cilantro, and what tasted like Carolina Gold rice (not specifically stated on the menu). The dish was excellent. I'm craving it right now. I had the meatloaf, which came with two sides for $10. The meat loaf itself was pretty standard but the tangy ketchup sauce took it to a whole new level. It was more like a really excellent bbq sauce. The mac'n'cheese was very good as were the skin-on mashed potatoes. I was tempted to order the homemade pistacchio ice cream, but I restrained myself. The food took a while to come out, but it was definitely worth the wait. It's hard to find good food for cheap in this town, but this is one of those places. They are open for breakfast a lunch during the week and till 4 AM on weekends.
