We went to the Centre Street Cafe in Jamaica Plain for the first time last night. And, after a few weeks of hitting disappointing restaurants, I have to say that this place really blew me away.
I had the salisbury steak there, but this was not the kind I remember from back in grade school (thank God!). It was a huge hunk of fresh, all-natural beef with a nice mix of onions and spices. It came with some really tasty mashed potatoes and broccoli, too.
The potato and leek soup was fantastic, as were the glasses of pinot grigio and vina borgia (a buttery red wine from Spain).
The place is attractive in a funky, eclectic way; it was a bit hectic at times because it is such a small restaurant, and the people who work there really work hard (the owner runs a tight ship).
I'd have to put the Centre Street Cafe near the top of the list of restaurants I have been to so far this year. Orinoco in the South End is perhaps the only other restaurant that comes to mind that I liked better in 2006.
