Central Vietnamese Restaurant

Made another field trip to Little Saigon yesterday to further explore the menu at a restaurant that bills itself as a central Vietnamese eatery. The name of the place, as near as I can make out from the stylized script on their sign and business card, is Quand Hij (someone please correct me if you know this place).

I could eat here every day. My lunch companion was an architect friend who is also a master craftsman. Unlike most pho places which are long on savor but short on decor this place was all natural wood, with a koi pond and little wooden bridge leading to the hostess stand. As we were seated my friend pointed to a light fixture and said "I have one of those in my house..."

But as we all know, you can't eat decor - so we started with that old standby, spring rolls. These were simply the platonic form of salad roll, fresh and clean-tasting with a very pleasing herbal aftertaste from the combination of greens inside.

Next up was a dish I had on my first visit that I'd been dreaming about non-stop since then. It's a Hue-style noodle soup with shrimp cake, beef and pork in an addictive broth spiked with chili oil. Instead of the usual plate of herbs that accompany pho, here they set down a kind of shredded slaw to put in your soup - and a ramekin of a mixture of hot sauces for dipping. Chili-head heaven...

After lunch we made a couple more stops, all in the same mini-mall. First up was New Jerky for snacks to take home. Got some honey pecans that were essentially crack in nut form - eat one and next thing you know you're regaining consciousness and the whole bag is gone.

Next was the enormous and fascinating T&K Market. This is a great place for fresh produce and asian pantry staples at bargain prices. I found an amazing package of 2 kinds of chinese sausages, a salted duck leg and a couple of pieces of bacon, vacuum packed together for a quick heat and eat barbeque combo plate. T&K also has a large fish and meat counter, but I'd go elsewhere for those items...
