Central SF - Best Produce Store I've Found

Niki Rothman | Jun 19, 2006 06:28 PM

This is in reference to some recent threads about finding the best produce values in the central SF area. We've discussed the relative merits of Golden Produce on Church, just north of Market, and the other produce retailers in the general vicinity.

A couple of weeks ago I discovered what I think is the best source so far. The quality is comparable to Golden Produce, and the produce selection is excellent - most of it looks fine and tasted fantastic. Bell peppers 99 cents a pound, a big bag of red grapefruit was $1.99, asparagus 99 cents a pound, big cantaloups and honeydew melons $1.49 each. The hothouse on-the-vine tomatoes were sweet and flavorful - under $1 per pound - at Golden Produce these can be about $3 a pound. Like Golden Produce, there were some organic choices, excellent cheeses - some locally produced and none more than about $5.50 a pound, and plenty of dry grocery items with which to complete the meal. A can of top brand solid albacore tuna is $1.49; at Golden Produce a can of off-brand tongol (catfood grade) chunk light tuna is $2.49. Prices are about half to quarter of what Golden Produce charges. The prices are on a par, or even better than my previous price busting favorites - the bodegas around 16th. and Mission but the quality and selection are much better.

Location: north west corner of Divisadero and Page. Check it out.
