ate my first breakfast at center street cafe last sunday. as i had suspected, there was a sizeable line upon arrival at 10ish AM. the heat was a bit intense but the line moved at a reasonable clip and a waiter kindly came around with ice water after a bit. we had come packing sunscreen.
the cafe has a lovely, bustling atmosphere. the small children present were amazingly well behaved and very cute.
i had the cuban scramble and friend had a waffle special - oat batter with maple whipped cream and fresh fruit (was supposed to be strawberries, some other berries and bananas but she asked them to hold the bananas. they not only held the appropriate fruit but also substituted out for kiwi, a very nice gesture on their part, i thought). the waffles were a terrific texture - not too heavy, not too hard - and though there was a tad more whipped cream than she might've liked on top, the dish overall was great.
the cuban scramble - eggs, plantains, corn, black beans, salsa-like tomato stuff, and cheese all mixed together - was INCREDIBLE and ENORMOUS (WARNING: if you go, know that ONE scramble can easily feed two people. i took home leftovers and ate it for two subsequent meals!)
everything on the menu looked great. the fruit pancakes that day were strawberry banana, with the fruit in the pancakes.
i can't wait to go back, line and all!
