I live in Santa Monica, so short of San Dimas or Valencia, I can't go much further for dinner on a rainy Friday than Casa Bianca.
Left westside at 7PM. Put name on list at CB at 752PM.
Drank cocktails at The Chalet (great, uncrowded bar) until 9PM. Ordered pizza per CH recs, waited 10 minutes for a table.
Garlic bread. Gallon of chianti. Salads. And then the main event.
Ordered two pies to accommodate a vegetarian in the group. The sausage and eggplant had me at hello. Spicy sausage crumbles, crispy crust and cheese, tangy sauce, and the Regular John's circa 1978 blackened corn meal underneath.
I usually don't think Hounds overstate, but I was still unprepared for how excellent this pie was. I have lived in L.A. for over 30 years, and this was my first trip to Eagle Rock, and my first CB experience. I will be back, traffic, rain, distance, wait be damned. Bravo.
FWIW, pie #2 was green pepper-mushroom, and the shrooms were of the canned variety. CB could easily marinate their own shroom recipe, and become famous for it, rather than look like they're taking a canned shortcut.
Still, I wish I'd never even seen the other pie, the sausage and eggplant was so good.
