Carmel has never impressed me with its restaurants but last weekend we found two great places in Carmel. First Mundaka is a authentic Tapas bar that opened in May 2009.
The owner and chef have recreated the best of what they discovered traveling through Spain.
You can stand at the small bar or sit at a table. Small very reasonably priced wine list with great Spanish wine selections. Four of us tried 10 of the approximately 25 small items on the menu plus two desserts. Cinnamon Braised Goat with root vegetables, Pork belly, house smoked stealhead on a potato blini with fried capers, baked dates stuffed with goat cheese and fig balsamic are a few of the plates we ordered. I would order every one again. The Chef has a fantastic hand. Every plate was interesting and seasoned perfectly. Fun lively room, a great place for dinner or appetizers. Wish it was closer to the Bay Area but worth the drive.
The second place we went was Luca. A great italian trattatoria with house smoked charcoutrie.
A little loud but the food was excellent each of the three times I have been there in 2009/10.
Nice too see there is quality food available in Carmel.
