Ate there last night and was sorely underwhelmed. I've loved this place for years, but something's changed. I ordered veal parmigiana, long my favorite dish there, and one that I'll usually overstuff myself trying to finish, it's so good. Last night I had no trouble stopping halfway through. Not inedible by a long shot, but nothing at all special. And the side of angel hair pasta served with it was cooked to sludge, half of it stuck together in a clump. If I want an oversized portion of mediocre Italian food there are plenty of places to go in Boston - and I've learned to avoid them like the plague. I really hope Carlo's hasn't joined that list.
And I realized last night that I didn't recognize anyone in the place - not that I know the staff by name, but I'd gotten used to seeing a lot of the same faces. Serivce was attentive and friendly, but all new people.
On top of which, I've rarely arrived between 7 and 9 PM without having to wait for a table. We got there about 8 on a warm Thursday night, Allston was swarming and abuzz (we actually had intended to eat at Deep Ellum but the place was mobbed so we went down the street to Carlo's) and they were only 2/3 full - and proceeded to get emptier as we ate.
Makes me wonder, have they changed hands, or the chef retired, or some other catastrophe I haven't heard about?
