Discovered a new Caribbean restaurant in the same compound as Fondue Fred on Telegraph Av. I am not an expert on Caribbean food and have often been disappointed with greasy meats and over salted vegetables. So imagine my surprise when we were served a perfectly cooked curried goat (described by Chef Judith as one of the healthiest meats one can eat). The meat was very tender, but kept its shape, it was permeated with the curry of t he islands which is very different to the Indian variety. It has more turmeric and a stronger taste of Jamaican pepper without being too spicy. Nibbling the meat off the tiny bones is a very fulfilling experience. It was accompanied by fried plantains which are sweet and slightly starchy, but in this version not too oily. Just enough to know they were fried. The Stewed oxtail is again wonderfully prepared with a thick sauce of a reduced stew. Garlic, vegetables, all mingled in the reduction. The fried chicken was also excellent though a friend said the breast was a bit dry
I did not agree being too busy eating the crispy parts!
Some great sides of rice and peas and Jamaican patties like mom would make if she was Jamaican
In short, I am very glad for this little Caribbean Cove in the middle of Berkeley and will eat this cuisine much more often.
