If you've never had a cara cara orange here's your opportunity. they come out around this time of the year just as the good satsuma tangerines are starting to fade out.
A Cara Cara is a navel orange with reddish pink flesh and a rich orange flavor with overtones of raspberries and strawberries it's smaller medium sized and if you're tired of oranges that just taste dry or bland you've got to try them out. I just got some at Mother's market in HB and I'm sure the other mothers must have them... also check whole foods or ask their produce manager to order them.
Speaking of oranges/tangerines. In addition to writing a research report on pesticides/fruit/veggies in college at UCI, I used to work in the produce dept. at mothers for over a year. Organic fruit/veggies contrary to popular belief are not necessarily spray free, nor do they always taste better.
However, when it comes to citrus and apples organic usually rules. I used to think I was allergic to apples until i started eating organic apples (esp. galas) i discovered that my reactions were coming from the pesticides... I wonder how often that is the case in food allergies.
Two weeks ago I bought a box of satsumas from traders joes: non-organic. they were so bland i just threw them out. The satsumas at mothers are so good that when i bring them to school i have students pleading with me to share.
But really try to find some local cara cara oranges. you'll be glad.
