Calcutta Grill / Newcastle

Went to the Calcutta Grill at the Newcastle (Bellevue area) golf course this evening and had a great dinner.

For starters the delicious bread was served with a side dish containing olive tapenade, butter and a spoonful of roast garlic paste. I've never had such a paste, and it was outstanding.

My wife had a dungeness crab salad ($12) and smoked salmon chowder ($6). Nice large portions of each, and the crab salad was all dressed up to look as good as it tasted. I had grilled Alaskan halibut with pecans, wild rice and asparagus--and I got a huge piece of fish, served on one of those giant plates like they have at Buca Beppo. What a nice surprise to have the grande size, and that fish was perfect! So was the rice and asparagus. $22.

I don't know if the "kid's meal" is of much interest to anyone here, but we ordered macaroni and cheese for my daughter and a cheeseburger for my son. The kids meals were excellent. Big portions of everything, and each kid's meal came with a few very fresh strawberries, orange slices and bunches of grapes. Soda included. $4.95 each. Great bargain for the kids!

Somehow I don't think this is a typical "chowhound" destination, like the chef is probably not some Euro lady who co-authored a book on organic mini carrots, but I was really pleased with everything and thought I'd mention it here.

The restaurant offers great views on a clear day, and everything is new, clean and classy.
