bureks in astoria

astoriaboy | Feb 1, 2003 01:19 PM

ok...last night, i didn't get around to checking on the fabled arepa lady...but, i did take my first foray into the burek underworld...

i paid a visit to "the house of pizza & italian cuisine" @42nd st & 30th ave...i walked in and immediately felt a little awkward as i was being scrutinized by the dudes occupying the back tables who looked like they just escaped from the russian gulag...but, whatever...they were harmless enough...and the counter girl was very sweet (and pretty darned sexy, if you ask me), explaining all the bureks she had available and drawing an imaginary triangle in the air in response to my inquiry as to the size of these mysterious bureks...

my choices were to come from either cheese, beef or spinach...my friend and i split one spinach and one beef...they were pretty big...about the thickness of a typical greek spinach pie, but about twice the size, otherwise...the taste of the spinach burek was similar to a spanakopita, but better...better than perhaps any spanky you can get these days, in astoria...the beef burek, i must admit, was a little boring...just some lightly seasoned ground beef in the phyllo-type pastry...it was ok...and at $3 a bargain...but, like i say, kinda boring...

the spinach was a winner, though...and it made me think that the cheese burek might be an even bigger winner...i will definitely be back...and, i will definitely try the other sarajevo burek/cevapi place on 35th ave, i think it is...hopefully, that place has yogurt involved, as i have heard...i might try them, tonight...and the arepa lady, if she exists, better look out for me, too...
