...of all the things I can read on a menu, those three words are my favorites. Okay, that message never adorns the menu of a truly Fine Dining establishment - nor, for that matter, does my other fave, "Menudo Todos Los Dias" - but I have neither the desire nor the budget to hang out in those places very much, anyway. Cafe Bizou is about as fancy as we get...
However, I am pretty picky. Really good coffee is essential; the possibility of a decent Bloody Mary is even better. Real biscuits, creative kinds of potato dishes, an interesting variety of meats, and a willingness to cook eggs any way they can be cooked - these are the basics. If I'm stuck with nothing but Norm's, I can deal with it. I've even eaten more than my share of the McMuffin variants, and a Breakfast Jack or two. I have also been hideously disappointed at Roscoe's, home of good chicken, great waffles, and the sorriest excuses for both biscuits and gravy I ever attempted to eat.
Best so far: Hill Street Cafe in La Canada, Fox's in Altadena, The Reyn on Lake in Pasadena, Rusty's Cafe 'way up in Victorville. Haven't tried the breakfast at Dish, just down Foothill from Hill Street, but it looked pretty good. Only problem with most of these places is limited serving times and none of those Bloody Marys. La Belle Epoque in Los Feliz has exquisite brunch stuff, too... Anyone got some more suggestions?
