This is part two of our recent holiday in the USA (part one is New York). We spent a fantastic week at a Sugarhouse on the Landmark trust Scott farm just outside Brattleboro. Because we were on bikes (we don't drive) and didn't much fancy toiling up the hills in the dark, we only ate out once, but what an evening! Peter Havens was excellent. I had duck pate followed by pasta with squash, it sounds so simple but was delicious. Lovely ambience (ambience is as important to us as food) and very friendly staff, one of who gave us cycle route tips.
Other than that, we ate better than we gave ever eaten at vacation rentals thanks to the well equipped kitchen and the Brattleboro Food Coop, where we were able to buy a wide variety of fresh , seasonal produce, and small quantities of things like flour and herbs, to cook ourselves. And since we were staying at the Scott farm, all the apples we wanted!
Amy's bakery supplied all our bread, as well as excellent sandwiches and light as air muffins.
The Vermont deli does great, huge pulled pork sandwiches.
Thanks to Chowhounders for the recommendations.
And on to Boston.....
