Boston Trip - Need Recs

JT | May 11, 2004 10:12 AM

Okay, coming back to Boston for my first trip in about 2 years. I have some ideas and need some advice. The wife and I will be staying with friends in Cambridge. We might have a car, but probably will be staying with T mostly.

Things tentatively planned:

A meal at Picante in Central Square. I used to live in Central Square and loved Picante. DC [where I live now] is predominantly Salvadoran, so we'd like to get some Mexican food. Some friends made noise about Annie's? being better -- but I think Picante's is just too close & too memory-bound.

Elephant Walk -- I kept meaning to try this place when I lived in Boston. I'd like to try it now that I'm visiting. Are there better places for Cambodian food?

Things needed:

A pho and/or banh mi place in Boston or Cambridge. Looking for high quality -- appearance does not matter.

A place for clam chowder / lobsters / western seafood in Boston or Cambridge. I saw the earlier recommendations for Captain Jacks' Summer Shack or something, and some for Essex & Gloucester. Is this where to go? Are there any places down by the wharf? My folks would take me to No-Name when I visited. Was this a mistake of youth?

A good Chinese bakery in Chinatown. Good roast pork buns & sesame balls a must.

A Cantonese seafood restaurant -- some place where we could get a whole fried fish with black bean sauce or such. Hopefully they'd bring us the fish before frying it up.

A place to eat lunch out by Concord / Waltham. We're planning to hike/canoe out there. Alternatively, the banh mi place might provide a take-along lunch.

Indonesian food? A person hight Tokay mentioned there once was an Indonesian carry-out service in Boston. Are there any restaurants?

Thanks in advance.
