We moved to the area 2 years ago and Border Grill was a restaurant I was eager to try havuing been a Two Hot Tamales fan for many years. We went 3-4 times and each time it was worse than the previous time. So we stopped going. A few weeks ago Susan Feniger was at the SM Farmers Market signing her cookbooks with the Border Grill truck. I bought a book and also told her how disppointing we had found Border Grill, SM. She asked how long since we had been there and when I said over a year, she asked that we try it again. She said she had personally been working very hard to get it back up to snuff. She gave me her card and said I should get in touch if it was not a good experience.
We went to lunch shortly thereafter and it was quite good. Then we went yesterday and had the DineLA lunch. It was $20 for 2 courses *(dessert was $6 extra) which seemed a little chintzy but then I do not care so much for dessert at lunch so not a really big deal. We shared 2 starters - empanada and sweet corn tamale - very good - and the lengua quesadilla - THE STAR of the meal and not a regular menu item. We both had the lamb tacos which were also very tasty. Portions were quite generous.
So get in if you can for the DineLA menu (sorry today is the last day) do so. Also give BG another chance, if like us, you had bad experiences there and had given up on it.
Susan Feniger, if you happen to read this, please put the lengua quesadilla on the regular menu and thanks for encouraging us to give BG another try.
