In a hot cross bun search I saw a sign that Danilo will be selling zeppole on Thursday. If you want a lot, you have to order ahead. If you want just one, you can drop in. Danilo is now serving gelato from Italy.
Unfortunately no hot cross buns or frittelle di riso they once made on Sunday only. They have gotten WILDLY popular. The little place was packed ... and mainly with Italian locals. There was also a line out the door.
At Emporio Rulli, they are now carrying bombolini, apricot and custard. I thought I tried the custard before so got the apricot. These are nice. They are real close to a good Polish donut, fat and yeasty with a nice apricot jam filling, the apricot donut rolled in sugar.
Turns out I was thinking of the zeppoli at Rulli. They usually carry these on St. Joseph's day and sometimes sfingi.
More about places carrying Italian donuts on St. Jospeh's day such as Victoria Pastry (top notch), Bovolo (need to try), Dopo. I don't think Hopkins Bakery mentioned in the link makes zepolli, only bombolini which are made on Saturdays and only ok.
