Hit Bloo on Saturday night. Very stylish modern space, minimalist look. Surprisingly easy to get a table at 8 pm on a weekend night. We just walked in.
I had a pistachio-crusted orange roughy with a grapefruit butter sauce. The roughy was cooked perfectly, very moist. Came with tasty mashed potatoes but they happily accomodated my request to substitute fresh mixed vegetables (carrots and fresh green beans). Overall, a very well-executed dish and the somewhat unusual flavor combinations married very nicely - the butter softened the acidity of the grapefruit but the pulp gave great texture to the sauce. Really good value at $13.95.
My brother had the long simmered brisket with mashed potatoes. The brisket was so tender it kept falling off of my fork. Presentation was a bit pedestrian but excellent stick-to-your-ribs fare. I think it was $12 or so.
We were not famished so appetizers and dessert didn't make the cut this time but they looked appealing. Wine list is small but decent, the French Pinot Gris I had was a nice glass of wine but maybe slightly overpriced at $7.50. Service was friendly and low key. The owner/chefs are very visible and clearly interested in their restaurant. The restaurant has been open for about a year now and is an excellent addition to the Lower Haight. Our dinner was an extremely pleasant experience and a recommended one.
