Black Pearl

Black Pearl is a very new place in the back of a bar called Julep - on Avenue A between Houston - 1st. Same block as Discovery Wines. It's basically a window in the back of the bar, which peeks into a kitchen, and they're serving up seafood. For now they're only open in the evenings. They plan to open during the days on Saturdays and Sundays, but not yet.

Went there this evening and got some stuff to go, and took it over to dba to eat. The bar that it's in is pretty divey, with loud music playing, and we had no desire to sit there. There is a somewhat unappealing outdoor area in the back, but we didn't want to sit there either.

Anyway, on to the food. The french fries are superlative. The fried clam bellies are the real deal - gooey bellies that burst in your mouth, with plenty of crispy batter. Tartar sauce could use a little more zing, though. Cole slaw completely forgettable. I did not understand the lobster roll at all. It was, simply, big pieces of lobster on a roll, and that's it. And I didn't think the lobster had a lot of lobster taste, and was slightly overcooked. Fried oysters were decent.

I think this place has the potential to get better. They just started. They're just warming up.
