Help! Birthday dinner decision in CT

So, on the recommendation of friends, I made dinner reservations at the Woodward House in Bethlehem, CT. I am having second thoughts after reading several bad and lukewarm reviews. The meal will be pushing the upper limits of our wallet, and with the added cost of a sitter, I only want to pay that kind of money for a truly phenomenal meal.

For our anniversary and special occasions, we often go to Ondine, but I want a break from the menu.

I'm looking for a quiet restaurant where my husband and I can enjoy time without the kids and not sitting right on top of other patrons within a reasonable driving distance of Newtown with very good food at not too outrageous prices. I'd like to keep it under $150 for apps., entree, dessert, and non-alcoholic drinks for two. My preference is for French or American food.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. My birthday is next week!
