Billy's Bakery: great the first time, lousy the second

Nor'easter | Aug 18, 2005 09:07 AM

I posted several months ago after I first stumbled upon Billy's Bakery, on 9th Avenue near 21st Street, raving about the slice of cake I had there (I think it was a chocolate cake with mocha buttercream frosting). Subsequently, I was surprised to see a lot of negative reviews on this board, which were inconsistent with my experience.

Now I finally understand. I went back yesterday, and although I had a very good "Hello Dolly" bar (a gooey, sweet coconut bar with chocolate and butterscotch chips), the slice of coconut cake with meringue frosting I had was massive in size but exceedingly dry and tasteless. (For those keeping score at home, I paid $7 for both.)

I'm sure I will be lured back to give it another try, but I now understand the negative reviews. As for the service, which also is a frequent subject of complaints on this board, I had no problem on my visits: they may not be warm and fuzzy, but I didn't get any attitude either.
