We went to the new Bellini Osteria (old Mandevilla location) Saturday night. We had 6:45 reservations and arrived exactly at 6:45 and were seated immediately at a (very small) two top in the patio.
The inside has been changed and updated with a nice large bar area just beyond the entrance, with several tables in the bar if you want to eat there. The dining room is a little smaller than it was before (which wasn’t big) but is pleasing. Unfortunately there are no booths, probably due to size limitations. There was patio is basically unchanged. They have a projector showing old movies with sub titles on one wall which I don’t believe was there at Mandevilla, and which (to me) made no sense.
We waited about 5 minutes for the waiter to take our drink order, and another 5 to get the drinks. Not great but acceptable. The restaurant was busy, but not full. There were only two servers on the patio.
The menu is very nice with lots of interesting choices, your standard Italian fare. Eventually we ordered, me a Cesar salad and Osobuco and my wife the Pomodoro with whole wheat pasta instead of the penne.
The food did come in a proper amount of time and was actually very good. We both enjoyed our meals. The Osobuco was served differently than I’ve had it at other places but it was very tasty. Unfortunately the waiter once he opened our wine never returned to give any pours, which we did but I do feel in a good restaurant, or one with a good server anyway, they should do often (whenever our glasses were emptying).
Now here is where the problems began. We finished dinner at about 8:00pm. We did not see our waiter for at least 15 minutes to ask for the dessert menu. That took 15 minutes to arrive, and my wife ordered a cup of coffee. That took 15 minutes to arrive and order dessert. The cream for the coffee was like diluted milk, or non fat milk. Our waiter was not to be found so we flagged down a busboy and asked for cream. He said that was cream, and there was no way it was even half/half or even 2% milk. Although he objected he brought another cream, but it was the same.
After 15 more minutes from ordering it, our dessert came. We told the waiter about the cream and he said the same thing as the busboy so we sent the coffee back. The dessert was dry and tasteless and a waste of calories and money. (It was billed as a Nutella chocolate cake, but there was no Nutella in sight).
We wanted the check as it was now approaching 9:00 pm, but again no waiter to be found. Finally we found another waitress and told her to tell our waiter we wanted the check. It arrived at 9:15pm.
The meal with corkage (for a respectable $10), and our entree’s was $125 (with a 15% tip – More than he deserved). Had the service been better we would be raving about this place (and left a better tip), but unfortunately it was so bad that we will not be returning for a second try.
The owner was in the hallway as we were leaving and said goodnight and thank you but did not inquire as to how we enjoyed (or didn’t enjoy) our meal and dining experience.
As a side note, I put the bill on my debit card, and today another charge appeared for Bellini Osteria for $46. I’m waiting for them to open to find out what this erroneous charge is for and to have it removed from my account. This type of thing does not go down well for me and if there was any chance of trying it again, well, now way.
