a few BBQ spots worth the trip

Most of these have been mentioned at some point on this site and some with negative comments. That is my point of departure. All are good - some are better. To start with the best, visit Piggy Pat's south of Utica NY off Rt 8; the Hickory House near Kingston on Rt 28 is right up there (in both cases the meat is slow cooked and the sauce is available on the side not slathered all over it). Giffy's is on Rt 9 in Clifton Park NY just north of Albany and is a satisfactory choice but not up to Piggy Pat's. PJ's just south of Saratoga Springs should be no more than a roadside checkpoint on the way to somewhere else. I have seen the post re a good spot north of Saratoga Springs on Rt 9N (Everglades, I think). I passed it today but they were not open yet and so we went to the Barnsider Smokehouse in Lake George. The ribs were very good and smokey (maybe a little dry). It was a lunch special. The pork shoulder sandwich was good too but sliced so the nomenclature was off (ie "pulled"). The onion rings were "ok" - definitely not up to Hickory House.
