A new fast food place opened up in Barre last Friday, called Barre Dogs. We stopped in tonight to give it a go. It is spotlessly clean, very tidy, nicely decorated, bright, and cheery. The woman behind the counter is warm and friendly, and happy to talk about her menu.
She makes her own mac and cheese, her own chili sauce, and her own baked beans. The potato salad is not hers (though if her mother lived nearby, she'd get her mother to make it, she tells me. :). She also said with the coming winter she's going to be adding some soups to her menu.
We both had chili cheese dogs with onions on top and shared a small mac and cheese and a 24 oz diet pepsi. The total bill was around $7.75. The hot dogs were perfectly competent and the chili was tasty, though not very spicy. The mac and cheese was better than Ed's Barrrbq down the street, though it would have benefited from the addition of onion to the roux.
The prices can't be beat, though, and the service is friendly, the restaurant was warm, and they were happy to see us. :) I grabbed a menu to bring along, too.
They offer the following toppings:
sauerkraut, chili sauce (no beans), cheese sauce (probably from a can, but still tasty), ketchup, mustard, relish, onion.
Regular dog is 1.85, a chili cheese dog is 2.10. These are regular sized hot dogs.
Mac and cheese is 1.25 for a small and 1.75 for a large. A small was in a 1 cup container. You can add some chili to that for twenty five cents. Baked beans are 1.35 and I didn't give those a try, so I can't report on them. They also have potato salad (1.50), chips (.99), or a side salad (1.50). You can get chili and cheese on tortilla chips, if you like (1.50).
They have regular cans of soda (1.00) and 24 ounce bottles (1.50) (plus deposit on both of those), bottled water (1.00) and coffee (1.00) for beverages.
Every day they have a special of 2 chili cheese dogs, small bag of chips, and a can of soda for $5 plus tax and deposit.
All in all, this is a decent place. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, but the prices are very reasonable for what you get (no five dollar hot dogs here!), it was satisfying and tasty, and well worth what I spent. I do recommend it if you're in the area and are looking for something inexpensive and reasonably filling.
