I've just started posting to ChowHound.com and I really love the discussion here. I've been carrying around a gripe about the restaurant Bar Pitti (on 6th Avenue, just north of Houston Street) for about two years and it occurs to me that here is the perfect place to air my grievance.
I went to Bar Pitti on a warm weekday evening in the middle of dinner time. There was a long line of people waiting to get in. The maitre'd was keeping track of the order of people who wanted tables, but not on paper, just mentally. I was there alone, and I made it my business to keep track of who had arrived before me and after me. I waited about 45 minutes to be seated, and I was nearly starving. It got to the point where he'd seated those who'd arrived before me, and to my surprise, he started seating those who'd arrived after me. After it happened with the couple who'd arrived after me, I thought maybe it was an honest mistake, but then he seated 2 more couples who'd arrived after me, and he was avoiding my imploring looks. I realized that he had no intention of seating me. I love this restaurant's food and I really wanted to eat there, but it was clear that he wasn't going to "waste" a precious table on a lone diner. So, I walked away. I wish to this day that I'd stood up for my rights and chewed him out, but I was too hungry to argue at this point. I really resent Bar Pitti for the way they treated me and I thought Chow Hounds would be interested in this experience.
Anyone else ever been discrimitated against for wanting a table for one?
