no need to belabor the 'inoteca point....BUT: damn! that is some excellent food. went early to avoid waiting and really enjoyed the large, well-lit space. service was excellent, and that truffled egg toast truly was sublime--a classed-up version of eggs in a basket. and per recommendations from here, topped off with an afugato, WOW.
checked out bao noodles, the bao 111 outpost on 23rd and 2nd. our server was adorable, but still learning...she made several mistakes, service was patchy, but she apoligized for all fo them, and even gave us a free dish (i noticed the table next to us was also getting a free dish, poor thing, she must have been having a rough night all around). she made excellent recommendations, including sweet and sour calimari, a grilled eggplant, and then what was supposed to be a crispy red snapper in tamarind sauce, but which was instead sole i think (we were informed after we got it). no matter, it was terrific, lightly battered and fried pieces of terrific fish in a very spicy but also sort of sweet red sauce. finished up with a pan-dan (sp?) pannecotta that was a rival to the previous night's afugato. it is not to be missed--vaguely vanilla, with a slight afterthought of mint. a great addition to the neighborhood (which until now has had NOTHING!
