Read a pretty good review in the L.A. Times about this restaurant a couple of weeks ago and couldn't wait to try it. What a disappointment. Went on Sunday at 1 p.m. Restaurant empty except for one couple. Waitress difficult to understand - made ordering a bit confusing.
Appetizer: Vegetable rolls. Very greasy.
Salad: Papaya Salad - terrible. Very fowl, spoiled fish sauce taste. Papaya limp didn't seem fresh. Probably made days earlier. I was asked if I wanted crab with it and I assumed I would be getting dried crab instead I received a raw, halved, blue crab. Not that I'm opposed to raw seafood but after the funny flavor and smell of the papaya I was totally turned off to the crab. I've eaten this salad at Ruen Pair and other Thai restaurants and loved it.
Main: I asked if there were any seafood specials for that day. Something with shrimp and coconut cooked in foil and prepared in a way I couldn't understand was recommended. I thought it sounded good. What I got was a mound of creamy coconut sauce in foil with bits of fish, shrimp, New Zealand mussels and lots of imitation crab. The taste of coconut was appealing, but the mussels were like rubber and the imitation crab was just that.
My significant other ordered a pork dish and glass noodles with chicken and was equally disappointed
With 2 beers and a Thai iced coffee the bill came to $54. with tip. And to top it off I was in and out of the bathroom all the next day.
How could this place have gotten such a great review?
