My wife and I found ourselves at Bali Hai the other night for the first and last time ever. If you haven't been: you fill up a bowl ($6.50) or two ($8.50) of vegetables and/or frozen curls of meat, and they throw it on the grill, add a choice of unimaginative sauces, and bring it to your table with average to poor rice (as much as you can eat).
What can I say, but no ambience, no flavor, not much, really.
The alternatve which will always win out: Chai's on Erwin road. Not outstanding, but hot in temperature and spice (if you want), quick, not too pricey, and no worse ambience: think minimalist take-out non-dirty decor.
So, it took me almost two years to get to Bali Hai and I live around the corner. It lived up to all of my fears.
