I've never posted to this board before but did a lot of reading on it before I went to Miami. I don't know if this message belongs on this board on a non-food related site.
I wanted to write about my experience at Balan's on Lincoln Road to see if other 'hounds had similar experiences. We had a fine breakfast (in terms of the food) but an embarrassing incident and poor management ruined the place for us. My friend and I both went to use the restroom (they have these funky sliding doors that when off the runnner will open, even when locked) and a man accidently walked in on both of us within a few seconds. The bathrooms open up to the entire restaurant (which was pretty empty but I am sure that we gave the bartender and a few patrons a show).
I spoke to the manager, John, describing our experience. He totally negated it, first walking us back to the bathrooms and tried to convince us that we didn't lock them. We then showed him how the doors can open even when locked.
John, the manager, then made excuses and never apologized to us for the incident. He was very condescending to us and disappeared without a word of apology or offering to comp part of the bill.
My friend wanted to just get out of there, so we left but I went back two days later to speak with the management. I expressed my disatisfaction and got an apology. I asked him if he would comp our lunch the next day, and he was non-comittal and told me to come back again and see.
By that point, I had enough. Having worked in several restaurants as a waitress, I felt that his management of the situation was unacceptable.
Has anyone had a similar experience with Balan's or at another restaurant? How should I handle it?
