I don't get to go out much these days (we have a one year old), so when I do I try to pick a place that'll be worth it. Anyway, my wife and I went to Tarbells recently and had the worst dining experience for the money we have had in nearly a decade in Phoenix.
I had a lamb entree that was ugly (grey and slimy looking) and flat out icky: it had a sauce that was way to heavy on the balsamic vinegar and that brought out only the bitterness of the lamb. It makes my gorge rise to remember the taste now, and I dearly love both lamb and balsamic vinegar. Everything else was totally unremarkable and the service struck me as unhelpful and aloof. I'd have had a better time at taco bell.
Since this is generally a highly regarded place, I presume we went on a bad night. Right?
