On Sunday night, a friend and I, went into Grasshopper Restaurant in Berkeley to get something to eat. We ordered two appetizers to be split between the two of us. While the food was acceptable, albeit expensive, it was the conduct of the restaurant manager which startled both of us. The bill for the two of us was $13.50; my friend layed a $20 bill on the little tray with the bill. A lady came by to collect the monies and she asked us "do you need change"? Her question totally startled both of us, as in all the restaurants that I have ever visited in my life, this is the very first time, the server/waitress has ever asked this question-the cutomary procedure is for the waitress/server to bring the customer the correct change and then the customer decides from how much of a tip to leave for the service. My friend who was paying the bill told her, yes he wants change from the $20. My friend was so upset that he did not leave a tip at all for the waiter, who actually served us. After leaving the restauarant,, we decided to go back in to voice our displeasure at what happened. We asked the young bartendress for the manager/owner of the restaurant and guess who comes out to talk to us- the same lady who we were going to complain about( she was the manager). She defended her position, saying that "I ask all my customers do you need change when collecting the monies for their bill." I added my two cents, saying that is quite an unusual way of dealing with her patrons and that the customer expects to receive change no matter how large or small the bills is . Then she comes back with a very flip comment with a little smile on her face, "do you always wear sunglasses at night?"(I was wearing my prescription sunglasses at the time). Now, my wearing sunglasses had nothing at all to do with the subject matter at hand. Her little remark blew both of us away and really upset my friend, who became borderline-abusive. At that point, the manager, told us, that we were not welcome in her restaurant again and that we were to leave. We told her, don't worry, we will gladly leave and we will never be back.Just curious, what is you take on this incident?
Personally, I feel the lady was way out of line and unprofessional and we'll never, ever go back there again!!!!
